How to Hang and Arrange a Set of 3 Wall Frames
Share
A set of three frames can turn a plain wall into a feature wall, but only if it is hung evenly. Crooked spacing is the most common mistake, and it is easy to avoid.
The short answer: keep a gap of 2 to 3 inches between frames, centre the group at eye level, and mark the wall with paper cut-outs before you drill.
What you need
- Measuring tape
- Pencil
- Spirit level (or a level app on your phone)
- Masking tape and paper
- Drill and wall plugs or hooks, suited to your wall
Step 1: Choose the wall and the centre point
Decide where the middle of the group will go. Over a sofa, centre it on the sofa. On an open wall, centre it at eye level, about 57 inches (145 cm) from the floor.
Step 2: Pick a layout
- Straight line (horizontal): the three frames in a row. Best above a sofa, bed or console.
- Vertical line: one above the other. Best for narrow walls and hallways.
- Staggered: the middle frame slightly higher or lower. Best when you want a more relaxed look.
Step 3: Make paper templates
Trace each frame onto paper, cut it out and stick it on the wall with masking tape. Move the paper until the layout looks right. This avoids unnecessary holes in your wall.
Step 4: Keep the spacing even
Leave a gap of 2 to 3 inches between frames. Use the same gap everywhere. Tight, consistent spacing makes the three pieces read as one design.
Step 5: Mark, drill and hang
Mark the fixing points through the paper, remove the templates, drill, then hang. Check with the level before you tighten anything.
Common mistakes
- Hanging too high. Most people place decor above eye level.
- Uneven gaps between frames.
- Choosing a set too small for the wall.
- Skipping the paper test.
